Student Opportunities

Students interested in applying for our shadowing opportunities should follow the application requirements outlined below. For veterinary students interested in completing an externship at our facility, please email us directly as the application packet is not required. 

Requirements:Prospective students must be in an undergraduate, associates program, or recently graduated from a relevant field of study, be able to lift a minimum of 50 lbs., bend, stoop, stand for long periods, walk on variable substrate, work in all climate conditions, be able to read & follow instructions, communicate clearly, perform simple calculations and have dependable transportation. Students must to able to commit their entire day to being spent with us. This means being required to arrive to our clinic by 7:30am and staying until the day is complete, which may mean 5pm or later, depending on emergencies that may arise; your entire day should be free of any and all obligations. 

Students will also be expected to feed the animals that reside at our hospital one weekend (per month, if applicable). We currently have 5 goats, 1 horse, and 1 cat at our hospital. Feeding would include a morning feeding (7:30-8:30am) and an afternoon feeding (4-5pm) on both Saturday and Sunday.

  • Completed Summit Student Shadowing application, which can be found here

  • Review of our student expectations, which can be found here

  • Current resume (not to exceed one page)

  • At least one letter of recommendation written and dated within the last year, preferably emailed directly to us from the recommender (letters should be emailed to summitequinestudents@gmail.com with Subject Line: Recommendation Letter for ‘Name of Applicant’)

Email all required documents to summitequinestudents@gmail.com no later than the deadline indicated. Incomplete submissions will not be considered. Please email us if you have any questions. 

Time commitment:

Fall Semester: August - December

  • Application Packet due by July 15th

Spring Semester: January - May

  • Application Packet due by December 15th

Summer Semester: May - August

  • Application Packet due by April 15th

Letters of Recommendation: Students will be required to spend at least 200 hours at our clinic before they may request a letter of recommendation from our doctors. Please keep in mind that when applying to vet school, it is crucial to have good letters of recommendation, and not just letters to meet the bare minimum. This means spending ample time with your recommender so that they are able to truly speak on your qualities as an applicant and future professional in the field. 

If you wish to extend your time commitment with us in order to meet this required number of hours, please indicate so on your application packet.

Summit Equine Hospital is a busy, multi-doctor large animal practice located in the heart of Apex, NC. Our practice takes pride in teaching future veterinarians by offering student shadowing opportunities for undergraduates and externships for veterinary students. We allow students to gain valuable hands-on experience in large animal medicine. All we ask is that prospective students join us for the love of learning about the world of equine medicine.
